How To Convince Mom It’s Time To Pull The Plug on Old Dog?
I have a family dilemma. My family has a 14-year old Cocker Spaniel that appears to be on her last legs. She’s deaf from chronic ear infections(which also causes her to smell bad), she has had both her eyes removed due to glaucoma. She also has very bad teeth, which I fear may make her too uncomfortable to eat. She has frequent accidents in the house, which Mom cleans up with much difficulty. My mother is confined to a wheelchair & has great difficulty getting around. I have tried to point out, as gently as I can, that taking care of Dolly might have become too much for her (I’d help, but I have 2 children, one of whom is special needs) How do I convince Mom that Dolly is suffering & needs to be put out of her misery? Mom often denies Dolly has a problem. Help.
There could be a lot going on with your mom, psychologically. She may see or feel some connection to the dog’s survival and her own. I know it must be hard to watch the dog suffering (I would put the dog down if it were mine) and your mom struggling, but I don’t think that this is a decision you can make for her.
