I am using a Budget Truck to tow a front wheel drive sedan on a two wheel dolly next month. Any driving tips?
I’ve never driven with a car being towed before. This is a 600 mile trip, mostly highway. Not sure what the best driving practices are for a situation like this.
1. Put the FRONT wheels on the dolly to avoid damage to the transaxle and maintain directional control. 2. Be sure to secure the vehicle with the proper tie-down straps or chains (see your rental agent if you’re unsure how to do this). Use the magnetic stop/turn/taillights (may be extra rental but well worth it). Remember to connect the safety chains between the dolly and the truck, and do this properly (again, see your rental agent if you’re unsure how to do this) Be sure your rear view mirrors are properly adjusted. You WILL have “blind spots”, stay aware of them. While driving you must be ever conscious of your extra length and weight. Allow extra room for passing, lane changes and turns, and allow extra stopping distance. Watch the height of the truck and any bridge clearances. An 11′ high truck passing under a 10″6″ high bridge will experience a sudden and dramatic speed reduction (as some driver, new to the area routinely demonstrates on Storrow Drive in Boston, usually in late August – early September). When backing, I suggest if possible have someone go behind you and act as a “ground guide”, especially if you’re not familiar with backing up a truck with a trailer. May save you a lot of grief, not to mention dents and embarrassment.
Have a SAFE and fun trip!
