responsibility and loyalty to family iss a central part of thai culture. in that tong chose to not be with mew also the translation leaves something to be desired the words directly translated do mean what you say but the connotation is different. the way it was said comes off more like Chose what you want cause what i saydoesn’tt matter to you. with a response like that to chose mew would be a betrayal of his family at least in his mother’s eyes. in the end he chose his family over love. it is a sad ending but a common one in thai culture to chose family over all else
