Edward Cullen the new Double Standard Barbie?
I remember a time as a kid that people (women actually) were furious that Barbie was setting to a high a standard for Female Beauty and what can be considered beauty. Being a male I laughed and though, oh nothing could come of this. We have actress that are 95 pounds that feel to fat and Actress weighing in at 125 pounds being told they are way to fat. Weather this roots back to barbie is really not my question. Edward Cullen is now on the scene and there are actually real life girls that Want to marry him (This isn’t a question on mental disorder, just an observatory statement) Is the shoe on the other foot? Have men been given an unreachable standard that every woman wants? Is this a good thing, a bad thing, or justice?
If you look back Edward Cullen is just at the top of a very, very long list of unattainable romantic men. Woman will always swoon over the Edward Cullen’s or Mr. Darcy’s that we read about. They have all of the traits that woman think are romantic but if you were to dig deeper into the characters then you would see that they are all just as flawed as any man! After all Edward did leave Bella < I know some people just skip over this part but it's true He left....> He thought that he was doing what was best but it really wasn’t… Mr. Darcy sticks his nose in where it shouldn’t be and then tells Elizabeth that against his better judgment he loves her….um not really the most romantic thing to say! Woman want to know that the man they love loves them just as much! It is easy to see it in books… I mean most of the great love stories are written by woman so they are able to articulate what a woman wants… Most men aren’t the greatest at talking about their feelings < a very sad side effect of needing to be macho men> and women love the thought that there just may be a man out there that is willing to throw caution to the wind and really tell them how they feel! The girls that would “marry” Edward are still in the crush faze of their lives… Once you grow up and get beyond the fairy tales you learn what is really important and that to have a real relationship it takes more then just a “prince to ride up and save you” and it takes dedication, respect, love, devotion and a lot of hard work but it is worth all of it!
