Isn’t acetone from a hardware store too harsh on removing face up paint on bjd?

My boyfriend bought me acetone from the hardware store. I apply very little on two old barbie dolls to remove the face paint, as upon applying the acetone with cotton ball the acetone ate through my latex gloves, with out spilling any on the table it still left a strong smell. I took upon myself to pour out the acetone down the facet and flush the cotton balls down the toilet. I was so concern with the smell I wash my hand thoroughly and clean the sink with lemon and baking soda to get rid of the smell, I was also concern my dog and cat with asthma would been affected by the smell but fortunately they were not since I only use it for less than 1 minute and a half. My question is what is the difference in using acetone from the hardware store oppse to using 100% acetone for arts and craft?. This information was given to me from a dvd I purchased, it was showing how to repaint bjd and 100% acetone was amongst the list of items needed to repaint. Please advice. Thanks

Based on what I read the last couple of years acetone is the last thing you want to use.

In order of safety for the resin:

Best: Winsor & Newton Brush Restorer and Cleaner (and don’t use it as a brush cleaner – when doing a faceup since it can dissolve MSC coating)

2nd best: rubbing alcohol

3rd best: 100 percent NON-ACETONE nail polish remover from a drugstore

Last chance for difficult stains: real acetone nail polish remover from a drugstore (with no dyes, fragrances or moisturizers) but wash it off the head frequently – don’t let it stay on too long.

And always use lots of clean cotton balls or cotton pads to remove a faceup or you will just spread paint around and cause stains and overall tints where there was none before.
