In the bedroom it’s dark and silent Outside it’s dark and people talk The fear of a monster with bloodshot eyes And a small figure outlined in chalk. Summer is sinking into the leaves And innocence turns to shame Winter has come to the mutilated heart And the cold wind has blown out the flame A cat on the windowsill gazes in And waits for the moment it must Familiar now with the cruel ritual Which steals the child’s love and trust Broken in spirit and crying no tears For denial is the beasts greatest tool Keeping the secrets between doll, cat and girl And dreaming of going to school.
