rag doll breeders
How do i know if my cat is a ragdoll cat?

from what i’ve read he fits the bill perfectly. he loves to be carried around like a baby. he sleeps on his back and lays on his back in my lap. he loves everyone. he is huge! he has very long soft hair and a huge poofy tail (like a pomeranian) he is funny and charming. but the only thing he doesn’t have is blue eyes, his eyes are amber-ish.. his dad was a stray that no one ever saw and his mom is an american short hair..
Is it possible he is a rag-doll or can you only get them from a breeder?

For the purposes of showing and registration, a cat needs to be pedigreed. That is, there have to be records of its mother and father and their ancestry. The fact that his mother is an American Shorthair means that he doesn’t fit the requirements for ragdoll pedigree.

It IS possible that he was sired by a ragdoll that someone accidentally let out, or that the sire had some ragdoll ancestry, but that still wouldn’t make him a ragdoll in the strict sense. “Moggies”, as non-pedigree cats are known, tend to be a grab-bag bunch in that they can have almost any sort of personality or appearance.

In this case, since he exhibits many of the traits of the ragdoll breed, it’s quite possible that his unknown sire was either a ragdoll or descended from one. There’s also precedent for breeders to breed American Shorthairs with other pedigrees because the American Shorthair is known for being a hardy breed. This is usually done to mitigate genetic diseases and defects that can appear in inbred pedigrees.
