Toddler being groomed to become a lazy t.v. addict?
I babysat my step-sister’s 3 year old daughter this weekend and it seemed like she spent most of her time laying down watching movies or whining because I wouldn’t put on a movie immediately.
She even has her own portable DVD player and more movies than I do. It seems like her and other toddlers are being groomed to become lazy television addicts, and it really concerned me. It’s not like she was watching Baby Einstein videos either. They were all those Barbie butterfly/princess type of movies.
Am I just being strange and over-reacting or does it seem like her television time/habit is average for a 3 year old?
That’s sad to hear. I think you should get her some really cool videos to watch while you’re babysitting her. Anything you can find that will teach her something useful, get that.
Your step-sister is either too lazy to teach her anything or thinks she’ll learn by herself. Maybe she feels there’s more time to teach her when she’s older. Who knows. You should use your time with her to teach her great things. Go to the park with her, hang out outside and teach her to ride a bike (she’s too young but it’s still fun, just don’t let go). Find an excuse to keep her away from the TV and if you have to, reward her for being nice whenever possible, so she at least doesn’t feel like she’s losing something out of being babysat by you.
