My 7 yr old daughter uses my laptop all the time. Should I give her one for her 8th birthday?

It’s not like shes terribly spoiled. She’ll understand that it’s a huge gift. She watches DVDs and tv shows on it that i record. She goes to barbie.com and PBS Kids, safe stuff. I hope that I can set control limits on it allowing only sites that I allow, educational stuff. I also wonder if she’ll really appreciate it or if I should just wait another year or two until she will realy appreciate it, and by then the technology will be better anyway.

Why not treat yourself to a new laptop and give her your old one? I disagree that she is too young for this type of technology. It is a way of life for kids these days. If she is not allowed to use the technology that is available now, she will be way behind when she is suddenly deemed old enough, and technology is more advanced. That being said, there should be set parameters. Even if it is her own, she should still be where you can keep an eye on where she is. and she should be aware that you maintain the right to investigate what sites she visits. I think the only thing I would hold off on is emailing and IM friends. 7 year olds don’t have enough to say to each other to justify it. and that is a little too much freedom.
