However it is said that in Germany, in about later part of 18th century, these dolls were made; mostly out of bisque or ceramic. They had a height of about 8 inches. Modern dolls are copies of the ones made in Germany.
In about 1930s America showed a great interest in these dolls but they were later phased out of fashion. The interest revived in 1950s in America in these dolls. Though then they were made from ceramic. The dolls were very costly and as such were not affordable to all and sundry. The affluent mainly brought these dolls as collector’s specialties. However when various manufacturers initiated to manufacture these dolls with plastic and in large numbers they quickly appealed to the masses as they were readily affordable. At first these dolls were used as advertising models and show pieces to decorate the car interior. One such is the ‘hula girl’ which uses to hang over the dashboards of plenty of cars. They were made in shapes of animals, cartoon figures etc. Japan used to export papier-mâché made versions to America.
The Bobbleheads were of the colors of different baseball teams and as such were sought after by ardent baseball fans. The dolls represented the various baseball teams. Fans would have these dolls which would be dressed with the colors of the uniforms of the teams. Such dolls are still there intact are treated as collector’s items. Soon the Bobbleheads became icons in other sports as well. Many shaped as cartoon figures were popular among the children.
Today a Bobblehead as a Christmas gift is just the right idea. In fact it can be the perfect gift for wedding too and can be considered to be cool groomsmen gifts.
