What Musicals Sound Similar to Dr. Horrible?
I am in search of musicals that have a similar sound to Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog but I have been failing to find anything on my own. The real challenge is finding that really does sound similar.
My personal experience with Broadway musicals makes me feel like Dr. Horrible falls somewhere between the traditional Broadway sound (Hello Dolly, Chicago, The Music Man, etc.) and the more operatic Broadway (Phanton, Les Mis, etc.)
I have read that Stephen Sondheim was the influence behind the music of Dr. Horrible but other than Sweeny Todd most of his music falls into the more traditional Broadway category.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions of other musicals that fit into this odd hybrid category that Dr. Horrible lives in please let me know.
Thanks!
Actually, lots of Sondheim does sound like Dr. Horrible – that’s what I was thinking before I got to that part of your question. Lots of shows, like Company and Into the Woods, have the same wideish variety of types of songs, that same sort of self-awareness, and a sense of humour about them. Don’t knock it just because it doesn’t have gore.
RENT is going to be right in there, too, with its very real and natural approach.
Of course, Once More, With Feeling is going to be there, because it’s another Whedon musical.
You’ll notice that more modern musicals are getting closer to that mainstream-influenced sound than so-called classical musical theatre pieces.
