halloween costume help por favooooor?
so i know halloween isnt for another month but i need help. me and my bestie are gonna both be doll/puppet/marionettes(idk how to spell that) we wanna be kinda goth/punk/lolita style? lol…so umm yeah. we’re gonna be old ones that haven’t been used in a while…i’ve got these cute net gloves with roses and a choker with a spider, but what should i wear for the outfit? pics please! i wanna look REALLY cute and pretty. :]

Well…as a marionette puppeteer, I can assure you that your problem is not what clothes to wear. A marionette costume is dictated by what show I’m building. But if you want to look like a marionette, there’s some other things you need to think about.
The difference between normal clothes and marionette clothes is those frustrating things we suffer from–you see, since they are 1/5th our size at least, it’s difficult to find realistic cloth that’s not too bulky. If we want to use–say a leather jacket, we’d have to cut the sleeves at the shoulders and elbows so the puppet could still move in something so thick. We’d hide the disconnection with thinner cloth or paint underneath, of course. However, if you want to look like something that is smaller than we are, find thick cloth to make your clothes out of.
I would guess that you are going to suspend controls over your heads for the strings to go to. I just got back from a puppet convention where I took a lot of pictures of controls on the puppets in the exhibit. They’re up on Flickr in this pool:

But the bare minimum of strings for me is seven (7). They are two head strings above each ear, hand strings, knee strings, and a bottom string slightly above the tail bone.
Another thing that’s going to make you really look like a puppet is make-up. I’d put two black lines from the corners of your mouth down underneath your chin to another line all the way around the base of your head…showing that there is a moving mouth and a head disconnect from the neck (we do this so the marionettes can look up and down–side to side requires shoulder strings). Your elbows, knees, wrists and ankles should also have a black line–but most puppeteers use some piece of costume to hide those. If I were making a lady vampire puppet…I’d consider adding black lace bracelets, for example.
Finally, I’ll let you in on a little secret…since we’re so often employed by libraries, libraries tend to stock lots of books on puppets (so they can set them out when we come perform) as a result–if you want pictures other than mine of marionettes–try the library. Seriously..in some subjects libraries fall down, but never this one.
