i need to make a witch hat for halloween…any ideas?
i have been searching and searching for some decent instructions on how to make a witch hat, to no avail. all of the tutorials i come across are for doll hats or are for hats made of construction paper. my 2 year old wants to be a witch and i need to create a hat using fabric. im familiar with a sewing machine but im honestly not too hip on the sewing lingo. any thoughts would be very much appreciated!!
The procedure for sewing a witch’s hat is the same for making one of paper. There are two pieces cut: one for the center cone, and one for the brim. The reason most instructions are for paper is that it is easier to find stiff paper than stiff fabric. If you use fabric you will need to use a stiffener, or you will have a floppy cone and brim. In the first link below the author speaks of using cardboard, but it is really black posterboard. This link is helpful because it has pictures. The second link is also about using paper, but gives other useful hints on construction.
The base of the cone must have a diameter equal to your child’s head an inch above the eyebrows. Use a tape measure to find your child’s measurement. Cut a 12-inch radius half circle along one of the salvage edges, then mark the diameter plus one inch from one edge along the curve. Mark a line from this point to the center point of the half circle and cut off the excess fabric. Remember to add a half inch to the interior of the brim so you can attach the brim to the open end of the cone. Lay the cone flat with the two long edges together, wrong side up. Stitch 1/2 inch from this edge from the open end across the point of the cone. Trim a little of the excess fabric from the seam near the point. Turn the cone right side out; seam side in. Pin the open middle of the brim (wrong side up) against the open end of the cone, laying it toward the pointy end. Sew the brim to the cone The fabric here may need to be clipped underneath with a scissors about every inch toward but not through the finished seam so the brim will lay flat. Or, you may find the brim is more self supporting if it is not clipped. It depends on the fabric as to how it lays. A sturdy fabric will be easier to work with, but will weigh more. Glue a piece of ribbon on the outside of the hat over the seam between the brim and the cone. The last link below gives instruction on using fabric stiffener. I hope my instructions are clear. Good luck
