How do I add heart into your writing?
I’ve gathered the facts.
Show, dont tell. Rid of the onslaught of adverbs. Writing clear dialogue that stands on its own. Now i’m producing pieces that are presentable, and just that. Like a man in a nice clean shirt and pants. A girl with every hair piece curled to perfection. But they’re barbie dolls. It’s not as real, human, and and home ground as I wish.
After putting all the basics to use, I find myself lacking in the true emotion I want to throw out there. How the character feels, without falling into “telling”. Making the action scene without being too “imperfect”. And it leaves my prose lacking soul.
So how do you do this? How does one write from the heart while still maintaining a good piece of presentable writing? I’d like to know any advice. Thanks so much!
My advice is this.
In the first draft, do not worry about perfection. Let the writing be as messy and raw and uncut as you wish. Don’t fuss over rules, censor yourself, or go back and edit things. Just get it down. Separate yourself from the story, become the main character. Even if the main character looks nothing like you or acts like your polar opposite, you have to be them. You have to understand his/her desires, secrets, emotions and fears. You have to realize how tough of a situation they are in.
In revision, which should be done at least six weeks after the first draft, go back and edit everything. Polish it, remove the unnecessary, apply rules where they are required. After you’re through with the book, your writing should look presentable, clean and clear. But they will not be dolls, they will be real people, with hearts and souls behind their flawless surface.
Hope this helps,
