I feel like my parents FORCED me to be girly?
I’m straight, but I’ve always loved boy stuff since I was a child. If my parents saw me playing with hotwheels or action figures, they would literally jerk them out of my hands and tell me that “little girls don’t play with those”.
It just pisses me off so much just thinking about it….
I also wanted to play sports as a child, but my parents would never allow me to because I “might get hurt” or “boys might tease you”. They would force me to participate in beauty pageants (bleh) and would paint me up like a barbie doll (regardless of how many times I told them I hated it).
Anyone else have a similar childhood?
I had it pretty easy as far as discovering my identity goes. My mom is a lesbian and understands that imagination doesn’t care about gender. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
The good news for you is that now is the time you can learn to forgive and heal. Your parents did not intend to harm your development. They were acting in what they thought was your best interest. Talk with them about it now – you can all learn to get past it and create healthy relationships with each other.
