3 years old and can’t pedal forward?
My daughter just turned 3 years old last month. We got her a “Smart Cycle” which is like a video game/work out bike looking toy. It lets her play games with her favorite characters (Barbie, Dora, SpongeBob) and she has to pedal to move. But she can only pedal backwards. I’ve taught her how to do it, even moved her feet for her with my hands. But she just goes backwards. Is it because she can’t do it? Or is she just stubborn? It doesn’t bother me. If thats what she wants to do it is fine with me. I don’t get mad. But I am worried itmay be a milestone that she should be accomplishing. Anybody else have this problem?
PS: She does have a tricycle and only uses it every once in a while, and I never really noticed (because it is inside) but she pushes it with her feet instead of pedaling. I’ve never actually SEEN her pedal…
That bike looks so fun! If they’re going to play video games, at least they’re educational. And the exercise from the bike is an added benefit. My husband’s aunt asked if she could buy one for our son for Christmas, and I graciously agreed.
Anyway, try working with your daughter on riding a regular tricycle first. Have her sit on it with her feet on the pedals. Then, kneel in front of the bike, facing her. Hold her feet and move them on the pedals, to make the pedals move. Do this for a few minutes, and then have her try it herself. Children’s brains make a pattern that keeps them pedaling without ever thinking about it – that’s why it’s said that one never forgets how to ride a bicycle. Don’t worry if she doesn’t get it right away; she’ll get it in her own time.
