Why in the world would Vancouver get the 2010 Olympics?
Your forgetting something Calgary had the 1988 Winter Olympics and didn’t have the problems you mentioned.
Vancouver won based on the fact it’s a major city on the Pacific Rim that can more then handle the 2010 Winter Olympics. In terms of what the area has to offer is Whistler one of the great skiing resorts in the world. Canada and winter sports is kind of a natural fit. I expect tickets and overall attendance will be higher then it was in Turin.
Try not to compare today with 1976 as the political/economic situation was a time of stagflation (high interest rates and unemployment) brought on by the global oil crises. This meant that labor and construction costs are going to be very high throw in the fact Quebec had a Socialist government that didn’t have private sponsorships to off set the costs as they funded it with government money.Throw in the fact powerful labor unions where able to hold Montreal hostage and cost overruns where astronomical.
Lastly your forgetting one other cost to the 1976 games was the added security costs after the terrorist attack at the 1972 Munich games. Quebec was experiencing their own political troubles as the radical Quebec separatist group committed acts of political violence.
Vancouver, British Colombia has no such political problems and has a more pro market economy making this city a winner in the global economy. It’s kind of ironic that a strong Canadian dollar is what causing some of the costs to increase.
I have to disagree with Lestermount as he implies the only reason Salt Lake City won the Olympics was over bribery in fact they did the same thing that every other city did to win over the IOC delegates and if you ask me the whole thing was overblown political grandstanding. In gact the 2006 Olympics where profitable under the leadership of Mitt Romney.
Salt Lake City proved to be an excellent choice as they had 1st class facilities and Park City.
