What should I be looking for when sorting through old coins?
Most of the coins I’ve found so far are oldish, 1939-1970′s. It’s a collection of nickels, dimes, quarters, and half-dollars that belonged to my Stepmother’s mother, which I’m organizing for her. So far, I’ve been keeping track of any little irregularities I can see, but I’m very much an amateur. The coins aren’t in great condition for the most part, and all I’ve manaed to do is segregate them according to their year and separate the ones with “D” and “S” mint marks (right?) in case they turn out to be quasi-valuable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Here are some helpful links. The blue book gives wholesale values and the red book give retail values. I hope that helps.
