Should I take a 1923 silver dollar out of its holder if I don’t want to sell it and it has already been used?
A couple of days ago, a bought a 1923 Peace Dollar that is in very fine condition for $21. The problem is that I like putting my hands on things and playing around with them, and I am having a hard time resisting taking the coin out of its carboard holder and flipping it around and carrying it around with me to show my friends. It is one of the more valuable coins that I have, but I don’t think I would be willing to resell it.
Oh, by the way, I already took the coin out of its case and starting tossing it around and probably already took some its value. I put it back in after and stapled the holder back shut.
As an amateur, part time coin collector for decades, I can appreciate your urge to take the coin out and “play with it”, but, as an “old man”, as my son calls me, I’ve grown to appreciate the need to keep some things away from human chemicals and general exposure, and having some valuable coin in my pocket with other change and keys and other things that will mar its appearance. My older sister stole all my coins and spent them at face value to get her drugs and stuff, and so I’ve been without them for quite some time, and when, just the other day, I found a 1919 D wheat penny in my change, I was reawakened to the value of such historical items as old coins. You may not be able to fully appreciate that at your young age. I just want to save you from the regret of losing such a valuable piece of history, regardless of its market value. God Bless you.
