Thousand Dollar Bill to inherit, when?

My father told me he has a thousand dollar bill in a safety deposit at the bank. Where would he have gotten it, besides inheriting it? Do they still print them? If I am the older child, would I inherit it when he dies? What colour are the 1000 dollar bills in Canada? Who is on them? When???
