Why is the Australian $2 coin smaller than the $1 dollar coin?

I recently went to New Zealand and Australia, and they both used coins instead of bills for $2 dollars and $1 dollar. NZ’s coins are proportionate – the larger coin is the larger amount. But what’s with Australia’s coins?
